This month Wrestling Aphrodite pays homage to the late, great Mae Young!

Wrestling Aphrodite: Mae Young - 01/17/14

Welcome everyone to the inaugural edition of this column 'Wrestling Aphrodite' here on Georgia Wrestling Fans. I wish this column was being written under different circumstances under a better mood but alas it is not. This column will shine a spotlight on the past, present and future of women's wrestling in the southeast.

This first column is dedicated to a true pioneer and a legend in wrestling in general Mae Young. Most casual wrestling fans know Mae Young from her stint in WWE. In truth, she was a pioneer in women's wrestling for several decades before ever making it to what most people consider the 'big time'! Her career spanned eight decades and after a long stint in the hospital with several false reports of her passing over the last few weeks, Mae Young died on Tuesday January 14th 2014. She started at age 15 in Tulsa Oklahoma on high school boys wrestling team. Her professional wrestling career began in 1939. She was one of the first females to tour postwar Japan in 1954. Most people know Mae and her best friend The Fabulous Moolah. Fabulous Moolah, also known as Lillian Ellison, was the first woman inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame; Mae Young was the third.

Mae Young made her World Wrestling Federation debut in September 1999. After Jeff Jarrett smashed a guitar over Moolah's head, he put the figure four on Mae Young who was trying to help out. And so the world was introduced to Mae Young. Her last match occurred on November 15th 2010 on an old school edition of Raw. She wrestled a Falls Count Anywhere handicap match against LayCool, in which she became the first person ever to wrestle and nine different decades.

Her accolades are enormous and extensive: NWA Florida Women's Championship. NWA United States women's championship. NWA Women's World Tag Team Championship. WWE Hall of Fame class of 2008. Professional wrestling Hall of Fame class of 2004. You can look anywhere in the southeast nc a hint of a young and some of the ladies in this business. The tenacity and the hard work that Mae Young showed is unmatched by most. If more women had her work rate women's wrestling would be better off than it is today. Mae is called the matriarch of the mat, the original diva.

So in retrospect the passing of Mae Young means one thing. Not only did we lose a true legendary wrestler, we may have lost arguably the greatest women's wrestler of all time.

And that we will leave for another column and another debate.

Hope you all enjoyed this column thank you for taking the time this will be a monthly column. Next month we will shed a spotlight on wrestling in the southeast as the ladies pertain to our business and we will talk about the present day of women's wrestling.
