Wrestling Aphrodite by The Wicked Nemesis

Wrestling Aphrodite by The Wicked Nemesis (May 2014)

Here is the long awaited new installment of Wrestling Aphrodite. For those that are reading this column for the first time, we focus on women's wrestling in the South East and to shine a light on the sport of the Gods, well in our case, Goddesses. A lot has happened over the last few months so let's jump right in.

Universal Independent Wrestling has been dominated by ONE name over the past several years. 'Calm Like a Bomb' Pandora. The first women's champion of UIW and their ONLY women's champion since winning the title in November 2012. (Editor's note: Nina Monet was actually the last woman to hold the title until giving it up do to injury last week) Her dominance hasn't been seen on the indies since Tracy Taylor ruled Global Championship Wrestling with an iron fist several years back. And who, pray-tell ended the Island Girl's dominance? 'Calm Like a Bomb' Pandora. Pandora then teamed with her good friend and quasi student, Nina Monet. Nina and Pandora formed the tag team of Pain and Pleasure; a fitting name for the duo. Nina and Pandora ruled women's tag team wrestling for almost two years. Fighting every incarnation of women's tag team on the circuit. Between Nina and Pandora's dominance as a tag and Pandora's individual accolades it appeared that something dramatic would have to happen to stop this perfect storm of estrogen... Then Nina Monet happened. The protegee of Pandora, turned her back on her teacher and joined The Blacklist, one of the preeminent factions in wrestling today. The Ebony Monoliths, Murder One and AJ Steele, DESTROYED Pandora and some may say went too far, when they powerbombed Pandora through an oak table, then embraced Nina in the middle of the UIW ring and harkened an end to the days of Pleasure and Pain. In a turn that shocked the crowd and stunned women's wrestling fans the region over, it may have also just ignited an inferno into what is the start of a great feud.

While Georgia has been the kingdom, sorry Queendom, of Pandora, 'The Island Girl' Tracy Taylor has established her dominance in Alabama. Tracy Taylor has taken on everyone that has dared venture into Global Championship Wrestling, and they have come in droves. From former NWA women's world champion 'Reigna del Piledriver' Tasha Simone, former OVW women's champion Taeler Hendrix, UIW women's champ 'Calm Like a Bomb' Pandora, and even Nina Monet, each have taken their turns trying to dethrone Tracy. Mrs Taylor has swayed in between a fan favorite and an antagonist like no other, and all the while having a smile on her face. It has been some time since Tracy was really been pushed to her limits and it remains to be seen if ANYONE can rise to the occasion and push Tracy to the edge of the wave of wrestling that she loves 'hanging ten' on so much. With Pandora seemingly a crowd favorite after the attack suffered at the hands of Murder One and AJ Steele were still evident several weeks later at GCW in Pell City, Alabama, where does this place Tracy Taylor in the chess board of war that is the women's division of Global Championship Wrestling? Only time will tell, but as a hard nosed veteran in this business, it'll take a nation of millions to hold back The Island Girl.

Now, onto Nina Monet. It takes balls. I mean big brass balls to step up to a legend and slap them in the mouth in front of everyone that you respect. THEN, to take something that you help build and just take a bulldozer to it, Then run it over with a steam roller. Then put 6 feet of concrete on top of what you built and just let it harden to a rock solid foundation, then set up shop and that very spot. That's what Nina did when she turned on Pandora. Nina and Pandora reminded even the most casual wrestling fan that women's wrestling was alive and well... AND that two women could cause a revolution in women's tag team wrestling. Maybe Nina has decided to be Captain Ahab and has tailored Pandora has her Moby Dick, but she has put a red dot on the forehead of her great white hope and appears to have locked in. Whatever flipped the switch in Nina to bring out the darkness that was boiling up inside of her, it is great for women's wrestling. Grouped with AJ Steele and Murder One, the sky is the limit for Nina Monet; as long as she keeps the intensity going and keeps those 10 inch stilettos on Pandora's windpipe.

Well, there you have it. Hopefully this shed some light on women's wrestling for even a few of you out there. Yes, I know I didn't even mention Mickie Knuckles and all the ass she is kicking, but that will be for another article. By the way, this Saturday May 17th, 2014, Mickie Knuckles will be facing 'Calm Like a Bomb' Pandora in Dallas, Georgia. This will be a fight from the beginning bell to the the finish, I'm sure of that. Thanks for reading.

Wrestling Aphrodite by The Wicked Nemesis (February 2014)

Welcome to the latest edition of Wrestling Aphrodite. This month in wake of the Barbi Hayden/NWA incident, we will be discussing the place these matches have in wrestling.

For those unaware, the National Wrestling Alliance has crowned a new women's world champion. Barbi Hayen defeated Kacee Carlisle who had held the championship since winning the title from Tasha Simone on October 20th, 2012. Now the NWA has gone though a huge change over the last few years with entire new regime change and every championship switching hands from the reigning champions under the old power structure. In other words, this isn't your father's NWA. On January 25th 2014 Barbi Hayden defeated Kacee for the championship. Not that big of a deal seeing the NWA has seemingly moved every championship to the state of Texas. Now we can debate all day about Barbi's in ring work but that's not what this is about.

We all do things in the heat of the moment and in the passion of things we love. Richard Sherman was crucified for calling Michael Crabtree a mediocre wide receiver after knocking down what would be a game winning TD catch intended for Crabtree in the NFC Championship game. Barbi Hayden is no Richard Sherman, but she had just won her first world title. Now Barbi could have said ANYTHING passionate about winning the NWA women's world title and I believe everyone would have supported her........... BUT. Barbi decides this would be a great time to plug her customs matches...... "Don't forget to order your customs matches with the world champ." and also adds she's eating hot wings with a few guys. All this while taking her very first promo pic, with the world title in hand, in front of a green screen. Let that sink in. Now I know for the casual wrestling fan this throws up no red flags and they see nothing at all wrong with this. For those that know the LINEAGE of that very title this is an insult. It is a slap in the face to all the women who busted their asses as a wrestler and paid their dues in hopes of wearing the very title so many great women through history have held. I talked to 'Calm Like a Bomb' Pandora about this and she said that "customs matches and legit women's title matches are two totally different worlds." 'Miss Natural' Heather Patera reiterated this very statement saying "that in tis day and age women just don't see anything wrong with it" adding "most women don't understand the lineage of the women's title to begin with."

Lord knows I am not against customs matches. For a lot of ladies this is their opportunity to make good money in a day or two worth of matches. I recently interviewed Miss Rachel who runs a customs match company and i asked her to describe customs matches in its simplest terms and she said it was basically, "fans placing orders to set up matches between girls they may not get to ever see work" stating that she "contacts girls that fans have contacted her about and ask if the girls can work those days available." Some customs matches are completely script while others are simply finishes put together by fans. I've actually worked several events where customs matches have taken place and the girls can make some good money off these matches. They definitely serve a certain niche.

Fetish matches are something all to their own. There are a wide variety of those and some women refuse to be associated with these but some don't. When most people hear customs matches, they instantly think of soft-core porn matches with nudity and sometimes in a room with mats on the floors. These do exist and the same things that perverts do to these matches they could do the same to 'text book' wrestling. Just my opinion but these are the matches most casual fans think about women's wrestling. I actually asked a FEMALE fan if she would order a customs match with guys with her setting up the match and finished she said she would never buy that. Now women's wrestling isn't as prevent as guys so customs serves a purpose. Not fetish matches.

With that being said, your first promo pic and statement after winning the only women's world title out there, that is not the time to plug customs matches. Period. Treat the title with some respect. It should be treated with the utmost honor. If someone doesn't get that simple statement, they shouldn't be holding the title. P.S. Fans shouldn't be able to carry the title.

Thank you for reading this. Next month we highlight a positive in women's wrestling: women's independent titles in the South East. Step your game up ladies.

This month Wrestling Aphrodite pays homage to the late, great Mae Young!

Wrestling Aphrodite - 01/17/14

Welcome everyone to the inaugural edition of this column 'Wrestling Aphrodite' here on Georgia Wrestling Fans. I wish this column was being written under different circumstances under a better mood but alas it is not. This column will shine a spotlight on the past, present and future of women's wrestling in the southeast.

This first column is dedicated to a true pioneer and a legend in wrestling in general Mae Young. Most casual wrestling fans know Mae Young from her stint in WWE. In truth, she was a pioneer in women's wrestling for several decades before ever making it to what most people consider the 'big time'! Her career spanned eight decades and after a long stint in the hospital with several false reports of her passing over the last few weeks, Mae Young died on Tuesday January 14th 2014. She started at age 15 in Tulsa Oklahoma on high school boys wrestling team. Her professional wrestling career began in 1939. She was one of the first females to tour postwar Japan in 1954. Most people know Mae and her best friend The Fabulous Moolah. Fabulous Moolah, also known as Lillian Ellison, was the first woman inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame; Mae Young was the third.

Mae Young made her World Wrestling Federation debut in September 1999. After Jeff Jarrett smashed a guitar over Moolah's head, he put the figure four on Mae Young who was trying to help out. And so the world was introduced to Mae Young. Her last match occurred on November 15th 2010 on an old school edition of Raw. She wrestled a Falls Count Anywhere handicap match against LayCool, in which she became the first person ever to wrestle and nine different decades.

Her accolades are enormous and extensive: NWA Florida Women's Championship. NWA United States women's championship. NWA Women's World Tag Team Championship. WWE Hall of Fame class of 2008. Professional wrestling Hall of Fame class of 2004. You can look anywhere in the southeast nc a hint of a young and some of the ladies in this business. The tenacity and the hard work that Mae Young showed is unmatched by most. If more women had her work rate women's wrestling would be better off than it is today. Mae is called the matriarch of the mat, the original diva.

So in retrospect the passing of Mae Young means one thing. Not only did we lose a true legendary wrestler, we may have lost arguably the greatest women's wrestler of all time.

And that we will leave for another column and another debate.

Hope you all enjoyed this column thank you for taking the time this will be a monthly column. Next month we will shed a spotlight on wrestling in the southeast as the ladies pertain to our business and we will talk about the present day of women's wrestling.
